Saturday June 11

All four of the bikes have been loaded onto the bike holder on the rear of the Civic, and I think when I sit in the drivers seat the front end of the car will come back down (just kidding).

Debbie and I scoped out several of the towns along our route to find the starting point (we got lost in Frostburg), and to see how to get from the trail to various restaurants. We were also able to get a parking pass at Great Falls and to check out the campground at Swains Lock (a very popular location on this Saturday afternoon).

Traffic was heavy today - the heaviest I remember of any of our trips to D.C. I'm not sure why.

We met Josh and Michelle at Michelle's house and all went to a Saturday evening service. Heather arrived shortly after we returned, and we were able to refit the rear rack, install fenders, and replace a tire on her bike. All of our tires are now Schwalbe Marathons, and my hope is that this will eliminate any chances of a flat.

At this point everything is going about as expected. One of the things that struck me was that while the interstate (and just about every road) in western Maryland is very hilly, our route will be flat as a pancake. It's hard to imagine a flat route through this terrain. While people are racing maniacally on the roads (no exaggeration), the towpath trail is a different world.

I'm looking forward to getting to the starting line tomorrow morning.
